Work With Us
Vintage Trains runs on the work of people who give their time freely, and there is a role for almost anyone willing to get involved. Some volunteers restore locomotives and rolling stock. Others work on board as stewards, ticket checkers, or buffet staff. Some help behind the scenes with fundraising, communications, or maintaining the site at Tyseley. You do not need previous experience or a background in railways. You need a willingness to learn and the time to give.
Ways to get involved
Volunteers support the full range of activity at Tyseley and on the mainline. This includes restoration work on locomotives and carriages, on-board roles like stewarding, ticket checking, and buffet service, guiding at the Tyseley Depot Guided Tours, fundraising and event support, site and depot maintenance, and communications work including the magazine, newsletter, and website. Some roles can be carried out entirely from home with just a computer and an internet connection.
Current projects looking for support
A number of ongoing projects are actively seeking volunteers. These include the development of the Staff Club and LMRCA premises, the restoration of two steam locomotives for the Tyseley Miniature Railway, the clearing and redevelopment of the old Visitor Centre into a Staff and Volunteer Mess Room, and the growth of Vintage Trains’ community outreach work with local stakeholders and groups.
Training and support
All volunteers are welcome, and Vintage Trains will do its best to match your interests with the opportunities available. For operational roles on site or on board, appropriate supervised training and assessment will be provided before you take on the role.
